"Él que lee mucho y anda mucho, ve mucho y sabe mucho."
-Don Quijote de la Mancha por Miguel de Cervantes
A little bit about me...officially, I am Mr. Cameron Stephen but my students call me Profe (a title used with teachers and those with a Master´s degree in Spanish-speaking cultures) and I coach so many of my students now call me Coach Profe, you can too. I teach at Cy-Fair High School in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District located in Cypress, Texas. I have taught there since 2000 and have served as the department chair of Foreign Languages since 2009. I have taught Pre-AP Spanish and AP Spanish Language since his first day in the classroom at Cy-Fair. I was responsible for re-starting the Native Speakers program at our school in 2001 and started the AP Spanish Literature program in 2002. Interestingly enough, when I started at Cy-Fair, only 3 students had participated in the AP Spanish Language exam. Now, our school regularly has more than 70 students that participate in AP Spanish Language & Culture and more than 20 that participate in AP Spanish Literature & Culture on a yearly basis.
Originally, I am a product of the AP Spanish program at Kearns High School in Salt Lake City, Utah where I took Spanish every year in high school and I took the AP Spanish Language exam in 1993. My passion for teaching was born while serving a mission for my church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, to the Dominican Republic from 1994 to 1996. Upon returning home, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish Literature from the University of Utah in 2000. Later, I completed a Master of Arts degree in Spanish Literature from the University of Houston in 2009.
In addition to my work at Cy-Fair High School, I have served as a reader for the AP Spanish Literature exam since 2005, a Table Leader since 2009, as a Question Leader since 2015, and as an Exam Leader in 2020. I have been a College Board Consultant since 2011, conducting workshops and summer institutes all over the country (literally from the east to the west coast) and virtually online. From 2012-2019, I was a member of the College Board’s Test Development Committee for AP Spanish Literature & Culture serving as the high school co-chair of the committee from 2015-2019. In 2016, I was very blessed to receive the prestigious Outstanding Teacher of the Humanities award from Texas Humanities, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
In 2018, I was blessed with the opportunity to become the assistant coach for Cy-Fair High School's aquatics program coaching swimming, diving, and water polo. In 2019, we won both the 6A Region 5 District 17 men's and women's swimming championships. In 2020, we won the 6A Region 5 District 17 women's swimming championship. Looking forward to winning many more in the near future.
